Beach Stone Totems

This is an activity I highly recommend for the lazy summer afternoons. In the hours when it was unbearably hot we usually retreated in the coolness of the house and dived into crafts and reading books.

For this activity we collected stones at the beach. We searched for particular ones - thin, flat and  elliptic because I wanted us to make totems.

We used tempera paints and consulted thistolearn about Native American Totems and their meaning.

Favourite photo shoot beach spot

Today we went to my favourite spot on the beach almost out of town where the beach gets a bit hilly and all strewn with beach grass I learned is called Ammophila. I especially like the effect and mixing of the colors of sand and the beach grass.

We took pictures of my newest bracelet. The tutorial is already finished but I will post it next week. Our vacation is coming to an end and I want to enjoy it and not miss a thing.

Bohemian Bracelet PDF Pattern

I have had many requests to write the pattern for the Bohemian Bracelet, but I thought it would be exciting if I make a new one.

Baby Crochet Sandals

I just made these for a new grandmother whom I met here while on holiday. Baby booties, sandals and such are something I love to dab into once in a while.

I do not always get to take pictures of them but I made sure I have enough time before giving these away to snap some photos.

Driftwood Hanger for Paper Boats - A Tutorial

One of the many driftwood projects I planned to do is this - to use driftwood as a wall hanger. Onto which I wanted to hang paper boats. These I learnt to make as a child and has been  absolutely my favorite origami project throughout the years.

To make them you need craft paper, sewing thread and needle and of course - driftwood.

I cut an A4 sheet in half. You can use any size of paper for different sizes of boats.

Fold the piece in half.

 Next, fold the sides inward.

Fold the lower part upwards

Do the same with the other side.

Put the fingers inside and pull outwards.

The paper resembles a diamond at this stage.
Press it and tuck in the sides.

Next, lift the bottom and fold.

Fold the other side, too.

Take the paper in your hands, put the fingers inside and pull.

It will look like this.
Pull the sides so that the center piece springs up.

Shape it up and your boat is done.

We did didn't have many colored paper to choose from so we made several white ones and the kids colored them in colors of their choosing (the bottom part of the picture).
These can make a cute mobile too. When Jacob was a toddler I had a mobile with these boats hung over his bed.He found them quite amusing.

Beach Activities for Kids and Family

Prior to going on vacation I made a list of beach activities I would like to try with my kids. I didn't plan on hauling the house with me in the sense of supplies we might need because I wanted to use things we will have at hand right then and there. However, a month is a long time for the kids, so I had to extend the list and found these ideas on the Internet we are all eager to try.

I have wanted to make a beach tent for ages. But this year I took a sheet from home hoping that this year we will actually make it.

Eva is a bit reluctant to become a mermaid (read: shy), so I am looking for a secluded place on the beach so we can do this.

Isn't this hilarious?

Every year we try to learn as much as possible about the nature around us. We'll continue that this year too.

Stones are plentiful for these activities.

Hopefully, we'll get creative with polishing our nails, if my sis doesn't forget to bring her nail polishes. We forgot ours.

 Until soon!

Crochet Flower Barefoot Sandals PDF Pattern

Here's my new crochet pattern for these adorable flower sandals. A lovely addition to your beach wear - just the right piece to beautify your summer. Put on your bikini, tie the barefoot sandals and you are ready to go.

I made these inspired by the view I have upon waking up every morning - of a white sandy beach kissed by the turquoise sea and pink oleanders framing the picture.

We took the photos at the old and abandoned railroad overlooking the beach where I used to go to with my parents when I was a child. So many good memories. It is the same place I blogged about last year.

The pattern is here.

Crochet Wall Art / Sensory Toys

Hi guys!
I've been quiet for a while because we are finally on holiday. We've been enjoying sunbathing, swimming, digging holes in the sand and making sand castles. In the hours when it was unbearably hot, and every living soul tried to hide in the shades, I too find a retreat and set to finish my collection.

I have some interesting activities for me and the children lined up to do while we are here, so hopefully I share something soon.
