"Bay of Bones" - Museum on Water

Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest  and deepest lakes in Europe, hosts one unique lake dwelling museum. It is popularly known as the The Bay of Bones - Museum on Water. The main source for the museum is the underwater archaeological site Plocha Michov Grad, which is 8,500 square metres large and dates back to the Bronze and the Iron Age (1200 - 700 BC).

The site Plocha Michov Grad has been subject of underwater excavations since 1997. About 6,000 wooden piles were discovered so far at a depth of 3-5 m. It is speculated that it was probably a platform housing 20 houses on it. During the excavations, many artifacts were discovered, mainly pottery sherds and some complete vessels, as well as stone and flint objects, a few bronze artifacts, many fragments of animal bones some of which used as tools.

The platform on which the museum houses are built is about 15-20 m away from the shore at a level of about 1.5 m above water level. Two of the houses have circular form and a diameter between 3.5 – 4.5 m; three are square with base dimensions of 4, 0 - 5,0 m and three rectangular ones with dimensions 4.0 x 8.0 m. They are built on wooden supports with wattle and daub walls. The interconnection is made with ligatures, wooden forked objects and animal skin. The roof constructions made out of wooden beams and thinner branches are covered with straw or reed. The height of the houses is 3.0 to 4.5 m. The interior of the larger houses represent a prehistoric ambiance: beds of animal skin, tools and other objects similar to the original artifacts discovered in the course of the underwater archaeological investigations. The settlement is connected with the shore via a wooden bridge with a mechanism for partial lifting and lowering.

Granny squared blankets

In my heart, there is a soft spot for granny squares. Whenever I see an incredible granny, my heart skips a beat. It undeniably did so upon seeing Magda's amazing blanket that can be found in the Simply Crochet's issue 23.

I also adore Kandi's idea of covering the crochet blanket with a quilted piece.

These are Renate's pillows, but imagine these in a blanket. Gorgeous!

Sharron shared a tutorial for these lovelies on her blog. Check it out!

These two squares are on the top of my list. I hope to make blankets with these one day. The one above comes with a tutorial courtesy of Monica.

There is also a tute for this one courtesy of Patricia

If you were wondering about me, well I've been labouring over a granny owl blanket I sincerely hope to finish soon.

Fall is here so it's time for some cuffs!

I can't believe how fast this month is going away! One day it's Monday and before you know it - the weekend came. I certainly miss the long days and the warm weather. I shudder at the thought that before long we'll have to pull out the sweaters and cardigans and put on socks.

But on the other hand, warmers and cuffs come with the long sleeves and with that I mustn't complain because they are my favourite accessories.

So here are my latest additions. I've been resolute about emptying the crochet box with all the teeny-tiny crochet(lings) and composing different pieces so this time I made bracelets or cuffs depending on one's preferences.

Japanese Flower Brooches and Buttton Rings

It's been ages since I listed physical items in my shop and I wanted to replenish it a bit, so yesterday, I took out "the box" and using this flower and that button, I made some rings and a couple of brooches.

I was dead tired to be honest, but this playful game of matching was just what I needed.

Hope you are having a good week so far. Another day and it's the weekend. Can't wait!

My Instagram

Almost a month ago, my husband got me a new phone for my birthday. The one I had earlier was an Android too but this one is the tops.  I mean the camera I have now on my phone makes me throw away my other cameras I have. {Just kidding ;}

That means I can enjoy a whole new world that was hard to have access to earlier. One of those is Instagram. I don't know about you, but Instagram is the absolute heaven for photography crazies like me. I am thoroughly and beyond recovery addicted to it.

I am already following a ton of amazing people and I am going to share my faves soon. If you have IG please write your name in the comments. I'd love to follow you. Mine is mayakuzman. See you there.

P.S. All the photos here were made yesterday while we visited (again!) the Monastery of St.Naum and the nearby island with the springs that flow into Lake Ohrid.

Mini Squares - free tutorial

After these round mini doilies, I thought it would be nice if some squares showed up, and here they are :)

To make these you need some leftover yarn and adequate hook. I used sport yarn and 1.9mm  (B1-E4) hook.

Pattern:

Chain 4 and join to make ring
Row 1: sc 8 in ring.

Row 2: sc1, sc2 in the same stitch; repeat this pattern 3 more times (12)

Row 3: sc1 in first stitch, sc1 in the next, sc2 in the same (third) stitch; repeat this pattern 3 more times (16)

Row 4: sc1 in the first 3 stitches, then sc2 in the next stitch; repeat this pattern 3 more times (20)

Border: Insert thread, chain 3 and sc in the next stitch. Increase the pattern for one sc more than row 4 (sc1 in the first 4 stitches, then sc2 in the next stitch; repeat this pattern 3 more times)

You can make the squares in different sizes. The intro photo shows squares of different sizes. The best for earrings and necklaces (if you ask me) is to crochet the square up to (including) row 3. For bracelets I would suggest including 5 rows (see my bracelet below).

Hope you like them!

You can download this pattern for free from Ravelry or Craftsy.

The National Park Galichica

Yesterday, the weather was overcast so we decided to spend time at the National Park Galichica. It is on the Mt Galichica whose location is between the two lakes - Ohrid and Prespa Lake. It has a well branched orography and interesting geo-morphological form. Its special treasure are the flora and the fauna with numerous protected endemic species.
