7 Frugal Things to Use in Styling Your Photos



When it comes to styling my photos for the jewelry as well as other things I make I always turn to interesting things I have at home which I can turn into photo props or backdrops.

1. Tablecloths and Doilies
The most used objects when it comes to photographing my jewelries are my crocheted and embroidered tablecloths and doilies. I like the effect they create and the feeling they give to the whole setting.

  
I always choose embroidered tablecloths that color match for a more effective picture. 









 2. Fabric
The second thing to use as a backdrop and this one comes very handy due to my large stash of fabric.


 




3. Flowers

These always make my heart jump a bit! Whether real, fabric or paper, flowers are an inexpensive props that make photos more natural, eye-catching and beautiful.







I have also included these rye stalks and fluffy white (here it is colored pink) beach weed (I really don't know the exact name) in this selection, which I have had for years and use them quite often.




4. Paper

I use gift paper, magazine covers, paper doilies, tissues or napkins, all kinds of cards I find in tune with certain projects.












5. Books

Books also come very handy when you want to fill in the scenery. I am especially fond of using drawings in books as backdrops for my romantic jewelry as you can see here.










6. Clothes

Clothes are not essential or necessary to use in styling your jewelry, but buyers always like to have an idea how to wear / style your product, so using clothes is also a good idea to include in your photo books / portfolios. Here are several examples of my choice of clothing for some of my crocheted pieces.














As you can see, my clothes preference is limited to shirts and blouses given the fact that brooches and necklaces are being the focal point of the picture and I sometimes use cardigans and scarves. My preferred color is white - it puts the emphasis on the photographed piece of jewelry and lets it pop out. 


7. Glasses and Cups

Glasses and cups proved to be very useful in styling photos. I use them to create a story behind the picture.

    I like my settings for jewelry pictures a lot more ' quiet ' . I want my jewelry to pop out and therefor never choose a crowdy setting. I use white paper as a background, or lace , fabric, wood , stones , a sea shelf...

    Great tips here.
    I take a lot of food photos and always use something interesting and pretty...flowers are my favorite...and candles...even photos of something you've bought at a thrift store are so much prettier when using props.....
