Crochet Flower Warmers

It all began with a skein of the ugliest beige / camel color I somehow managed to buy due to a bad lighting in my yarn shop. There was I in the yarn shop, scratching my head over the limited supply of yarn colors I needed to buy for my projects, when I happened upon this camel / dirty sand cotton yarn and knowing from experience that one could never have enough of beige (read: neutral) colors in one's stash, I decided to buy not one but 4 of these hideous skeins as I discovered the next morning under natural light.

And they spent their last 3 years waiting for their destined project. As I am not the person who gets rid of stuff easily, especially crochet yarn, I decided to use the unfortunate yarn for a project where it might get disguised and when I finished these warmers I knew this was the right project for it.

I have loved this idea of making warmers where the surface would be covered with flowers - saw that in a Japanese crochet magazine and fell in love with it. The design is mine - of both the warmers and the flowers. The thing is that when I had the first one ready - it was covered with 8 flowers - and it was ugly. So fast frogging ahead, ditching half of the flowers I reworked the design and arranged the flowers in the most pleasing (at least to my eyes) and attractive way. They are still kind of bulky when I put them on, but in a good way and I am sure they will be head turners. People will be either pleasantly amazed or wonder what the heck I was thinking about.

While working on them I got an idea for a new pair of warmers I am itching to try. Stay tuned!

  1. Oh Maya, you made me laugh with your description of the beige yarn! I don't think it's a hideous color and I like it but we all have different opinions on yarn and color. I love the way you decorated the hand warmers with the pretty flowers!!!
It is sometime hard to see the color of yarn in a store and then when you get it home. At least you decorated them.

    1. Thank you Julie! The yarn loving gods work magic when xou try to take a photo of the poor yarn. It looks fantastic in my pictures. Believe me. It's sorcery. It is yucky in reality. But with all the flowers, I think I saved it :)

  2. I love this idea! I giggled at your yarn disaster that turned into a beautiful mistake! (Been there and done that!)

  3. I think that the flowers really liven the beige/tan base up. How you do think powder blue and pink flowers will look on a gray base?

    1. Indeed they do. Powder blue and pink flowers would be perfect on a grey base. You read my mind. The base would be grey for the next ones, but without the blue flowers :)

  4. Ugly yarn can be beautiful too! Well done with those soft pink flowers on it. I love it!
    Have a great Saturday, Sigrid.
PS: I once used ugly green and brown in a blanket, but in combination with red, yellow and many other colors, I loved the result so much that I kept the blanket myself :-)

    1. Thank you Sigrid! There are always ways to use the "ugly" colors and I am sure your blanket turned lovely. I don't remember seeing it in your blanket selection. Did I miss it?

  5. I love your idea and the warmers will definitely be a head turner! I made something somewhat similar some years ago: pink warmers with tiny pink flowers and pearls. Have a lovely weekend!

  7. You're absolutely right: one cannot have enough neutrals. But oddly enough I have plenty of neutrals, hardly ever use them though. Me too I tend to buy 4 skeins of anything. Either 2 or 4 but buying 4 skeins I always hope it'll suffice for making anything "larger".
Your dislike of this beige notwithstanding: Your wristwarmers are absolutely beautiful!
    Have a lovely weekend,
