Crochet Jhumka Earrings - free pattern

Every time I see Jhumka earrings on the internet, a kind of sparkle lights up. I don't own a pair of such earrings; at least not until I decided to make crocheted ones. They are easy to make and I spent more time designing the beading than actually crocheting them.
They do make a wonderful gift so you may want to save this post.

Materials:
I used sport yarn but with coarser weaving so it gave a bit of sturdiness to the earrings, which in this case was perfect so I needn't use any starch to make them stiff. 1.9mm hook.

This is just the crochet pattern - beading is not included, but at the end I do explain how I beaded them.

Pattern:

Ch5 and join to make a ring.
Rnd 1: Sc 5 in ring
Rnd 2: Sc2 in each st. (10)
Rnd 3: Repeat rnd 2 (15)

Rnd 4: sc1 in first 2 st, sc2 in next; repeat all round (20)
Rnd 5: repeat rnd 4 (26)
Rnd 6: sc in first 2 st, sc2tog in next; repeat all round (20)

Rnd 7: Ch 4 and make a picot, sk 1 and sc in next st. Repeat this pattern around. You will end with 10 picots in the end.

Cut yarn, tie knots, weave ends. Jhumka done! One more to go.

Now, for the beading:
I used glass, plastic and pearl beads.
Made a crown around the center of the earring and then combining plastic and glass beads on four sides of it - made strings - a bit longer so they follow the shape of the earring but do not peek beyond the picot. Sewed on 4 pearl beads between the strings. There are about 2 seed beads on each of the picots. For the top I also used a pearl bead which has a chain on the bottom and it goes through the Jhumka bead and on the other end I also added another such pearl bead.

It is actually not so complicated as it may sound.

    1. Thank you Marjan. It was actually my blog pal Divya's influence. I didn't know about them too, but she makes incredible ones and it was her blog I saw them first at. Thank you on the sweet comment!

  2. I didn't know about these earrings before. They're pretty! Your crocheted version looks more bohemian and more 'you'. :-)

  3. Hey!! I am so glad that you finally made them. I would suggest that you use big bead caps on the underside the jhumka so that they retain the shape. You can also do floral jhumkas (karnphool) where you create a small graduating frill like pattern and roll it up do that it looks like a tulip.

    1. That is an incredible idea Divya. I didn't think of that! Thank you! Must look into the karnphool jhumkas too.
