Working on my floral banners I was left with a huge amount of scraps of yarn ends and tails. So getting ready to throw them away I rolled a pinch of them with my hands and that is how I got this idea of turning them into beads. So, mark my word, I am NEVER throwing them away again!
If you are inclined to try this, this is how I made them.
If you have a multicolored bunch, mix it well. Take a pinch, squish it with your hands well and then start rolling it until all tails are slightly blended. They won't be completely blended, that is why, you take a sewing thread (I used silk ones for this so as to add shine to the bead) and wrap it all around the bead to hold it in place. Then thread a needle and sew beads onto it. This further enhances the sturdiness and shape of the bead. Sew them in all directions. I had these adorable wooden buttons that I sewed in the center and my beads were done!
Note that some of the yarn will still peek, but I think it adds up to their cuteness.
And as you can see, I already used them to make a necklace.
Needless to say there is a jar full with yarn butts waiting to become beads :)
I picked up so much silk yarn waste 2 years back and hadn't figured out what to do with it - until now. Thanks for the idea, I'll make some beads.
ReplyDeleteOh, I can only imagine how beautiful they will be with silk threads!
DeleteThis is genius! I have started many jars of yarn ends thinking I could use them for something, but then I go through, and throw it out thinking I am crazy, and then go back and forth... This is something I definitely would like to try. Thank you! It's gorgeous! And what a unique necklace.
ReplyDeleteThank you Alexandra! Now I feel bad for all those ends I've thrown away :)
DeleteOh my goodness these beads are beautiful, Maya! Such a clever and creative idea and the necklace is so lovely and unique. I consider you the Queen of Glamor Crochet!
ReplyDeleteOh, Marie that is so sweet of you! Thank you so much!
DeleteOh my goodness, this is brilliant. I keep yarn ends because... well you know why - too much potential to throw them away - but I've never actually done anything with them! I'm trying this for sure! Did I mention that I love this idea?? !!
ReplyDeleteThank you Julie! Well, I am so glad of the positive feedback of this idea. Who could have known yarn butts can turn to be so attractive? :)
DeleteWhat a wonderful idea, I am looking for a glass jar right now to put them all in. So simple, so satisfying to use all those colourful leftovers and not throw them out. A girl after my own heart.
ReplyDeleteSo happy you like it Christina! I envision many jars filled with gorgeously colored tails!
DeleteOh my, you have created a new artform...with SCRAPS...love it, and dangling from a purse or scarf---how adorable.

ReplyDeleteThis is adorable. I have never seen anything like this.
ReplyDeleteI have left my little scrap pieces out for the birds in the Spring to help them build nest.
I love these beads!
Lisa
Thank you Lisa! I've read that people leave sewing threads and yarn for birds to make nests, but I thought what happens if they have little birdies that poop inside and whether that is a health risk for them so I was/am reluctant to do that.
