How to Read Granny Square Charts

Hi guys!

Here's the second part of how to read crochet charts, and for this time I chose a basic granny square pattern. A fairly easy granny - not complicated at all. It consists of 4 rounds each marked with a different color. The symbols (for you beginners) are given below. So, let's start.

I separated the rounds for easier understanding. First there is the chart for the relevant round and after that the photos and the written pattern (or the reading :) at the side. Follow the instructions below.

I hope this was intelligible and that you enjoyed it!
For the next time I thought a granny with a flower center would be interesting.

If you have any granny pattern chart you would like deciphered, send me the link and I'll try to write it down.

Have a lovely Saturday evening!

It took me years to figure out the granny square because some patterns just aren't written well at all. Finally found one on Tangled Happy that made complete sense and I wondered why I had never gotten it in the first place. Of course, there's plenty of other patterns out there that don't make sense to me at all no matter how hard I try. And reading charts is definitely not my forte. :) I might come up with something but it may not be what is intended by the pattern. Ha!

Wonderful! Great explanation and visuals! Can you explain to me how to insert a new color? I can't seem to figure that out. Do I just make a knot?

I love crochet and crochet most days, my blog is often about crocheting, but I never read symbol patterns, always word ones.. This post is so clear, I may now give it a try, thanks for the share x

Reading charts seems so intimidating. This is a great intro, thanks!

This is wonderful, so easy to understand. But my friend is a beginner and left handed. I try to help her but I am right handed. Can you show this process in a left handed version. Most patterns are for right handed persons and she is struggling. Thank you. Dorie

Dear Dorie, thank you so much for your sweet comment and your friend is blessed having you. As much as I would like to help, I too, being right handed have no idea how to crochet or do a tutorial for left handed people, but I am sure there are many attractive projects for left handed people, if googled right.
